The government of Canada is investing more than $616,000 through the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario to support jobs and businesses in the Temiskaming region of Ontario.

Of the funding, $209,500 will go to Daki Menan Lands and Resources Corp., to expand its forestry operations. The company, controlled by the Temagami First Nation on Bear Island, will use the funds to enhance forestry management, increase firewood production and build a portable sawmill. This will result in the creation of eight full-time job. With the new sawmill, the company will offer custom sawmilling services, as well as produce lumber for local markets and hardwood cants and boards for the industrial market in southern Ontario.

“At Daki Menan Lands and Resources Corporation, we are working hard to implement our forestry strategy and create opportunities for youth through initiatives such as the First Nation Jr. Ranger program. This investment will help us capitalize on business growth opportunities, expand our product line, reach new markets, and create quality jobs for our First Nation’s members.
